The Skinny Beet is a Boston-based personal chef and catering company. It is run by a husband and wife cooking duo, who are also a couple, literally. They founded the company because they wanted to share their passion for cooking.
Their services include:
•Personal Chef services: They service clients all over Greater Boston and beyond, including Cape Cod and the Islands and all of New England. They state “There isn’t anywhere we won’t go!”. They provide personal chef services to families and individuals of all ages, including those with strong preferences or picky children.
•Catering: They offer catering services for events and specifically cater weddings. They aim to be the caterer for couples who want something unique and different from average options. They work with clients to create completely customizable events and menus tailored to their tastes, aiming for a lasting and memorable experience.
•Private Cooking Classes: These are offered as a perfect alternative to a night out. Classes can be for any number of people. They are completely tailored to your tastes and can be as hands-on as you want. For classes, they help create the menu, do all the shopping, and show up with groceries and recipes.
The Skinny Beet’s food and philosophy is centered around cooking the way they like to eat. This means using lots of bold flavors inspired by global influences from their world travels. They focus on nutritionally thoughtful meals that combine an abundance of fresh vegetables and fruits as well as wholesome grains and proteins. They enjoy cooking anything from classic homestyle lasagna all the way to an elegant multi-course meal and everything in between. Their food is meant to excite and interest without straying too far from the comfort zone.
They emphasize that their ingredients are responsibly sourced, thoughtfully prepared, and presented in a way that is both creative and approachable. They source all of their quality ingredients the day that they cook to ensure the meals they prepare are the freshest. All their recipes and dishes are entirely customizable.
Katie and Richard have over 10 years of combined professional cooking experience. Both are professionally trained and serve safe certified. In-depth Bios of the Founders
Katie is one half of The Skinny Beet duo, serving as a professionally trained chef. She is also a food writer and food photographer. Her journey into professional cooking began after working in a corporate Human Resources job and dreaming about a life in the kitchen. In 2009, while still in HR, she started her blog, The Small Boston Kitchen. She later took a chance, quit her HR job, and attended culinary school. After culinary school, she started working alongside Richard, and “the two hit it off in every which way”.
Katie still maintains her blog, The Small Boston Kitchen. In 2014, she wrote and photographed her first cookbook, Superfood Sandwiches, which was due out in June 2015 from Fair Winds Press. She is also a contributing writer and photographer for Eater Boston. Her work has been featured in various publications and media outlets, including Boston Magazine, Food Republic, PBS, Mise Magazine, Culture Magazine, and Boston.com. She has also appeared on both NECN and the Cooking Channel. Katie is Serve Safe certified and has years of experience with dietary restrictions and allergies.
Richard is the other half of The Skinny Beet duo, also a professionally trained chef. His passion for cooking began in college when he wanted more from the food he was eating, and once he started, he didn’t stop. After graduating college, he worked a series of odd jobs before giving into his passion and going to culinary school. He works alongside Katie at The Skinny Beet. Richard is Serve Safe certified and has years of experience with dietary restrictions and allergies.
In addition to his professional cooking work, Richard writes the popular Boston Burger Blog. This blog details his ongoing search for the perfect burger. In 2014, Richard co-authored the cookbook American Burger Revival, which was scheduled to be in stores in May 2015 from Union Park Press. Like Katie, Richard’s work has been featured in significant publications: Boston Magazine, Food Republic, Mise Magazine, and Boston.com. He has also been a guest on radio and TV programs, including Boston Public Radio, Radio 92.9, and Chronicle
Boston’s culinary scene is a delicious representation of its rich history and coastal charm. Known as the heart of New England, the city excels in celebrating its maritime heritage through iconic seafood dishes such as creamy clam chowder, buttery lobster rolls, and fresh oysters shucked to perfection.
Beyond the sea, Boston’s food culture also boasts legendary desserts like the decadent Boston cream pie, which has become a sweet symbol of the city. Traditional taverns serve time-honored recipes that date back centuries, while contemporary eateries bring a modern twist to classic flavors. Whether dining in a cozy spot along the cobblestone streets or savoring innovative cuisine at a waterfront bistro, Boston blends its historic roots with an evolving culinary creativity that guarantees a memorable dining experience.
